Zenfolio | Southern Exposures Photography | Mississippi Kite

A beautiful Mississippi Kite landed in the top of a tree next to my yard this morning, June 24, 2012.

The kite is a bird of prety which mainly feeds on insects that it captures and eats while gliding around in the air. Kites are usually 13 - 17" long with a wingspan of about 3'. Their wings are narrow and pointed. They are very graceful in flight, lazily circling around appearing to float in the air as they hunt for insects.

Kites nest in urban areas and I often see 2 or 3 circling above our neighborhood so they must nest nearby. They are migratory birds, although some stay in MS year round, and winter as far south as Argentina.
