Jane and I enjoyed our visit to Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge Sept 22. We were 2 of 4 judges for the Refuge's annual Amateur Photo Contest. After judging, around 10:30 we headed out to look for things to photograph. We saw 3 or 4 gators (probably the same one twice) and had fun photographing them although a bright sunny day is not optimal for gators. Another highlight was a great blue heron trying to eat a fish, which appears to be a gar, and he had to dunk it in the water to get it to go down since he had dropped it on the ground and tried to get a better hold on it several times. The whole process took about 10 minutes. We also found a cooperative great egret on a log near the bank and a gator swam right by it but didn't pay it any attention.
